Starter problems.

Recommended Posts

My new toy is starting to give me trouble already. Since it's an '84 I guess it's kind of expected so I'm not to torqued off.

I'm have trouble getting it started. Normaly even when its cold all I have to do is open the throttle for about 2 seconds, hit the key, and it fires right off. Now when I turn the key I get nothing.  After about 5 or 6 times it will start like normal.

The dash lights do come on when I turn the key on so I guess it's not in the switch. After that I'm kinda lost since I don't have a test light :D . Any thoughts before I take it in?

My old car did that too, and it turned out the ignition switch was bad.  The lights & everything would come on when I turned the key but when I cranked it to "start" nothing happened about 50% of the time.

It could possibly be some dirty contacts or bad wiring between the ignition switch and the soleniod, or the soleniod itself is bad.   If it cranks over once in a while I highly doubt the motor.

I would suspect the ignition, personally, but it never hurts to check wiring and the soleniod.

Good luck!!
