'59 Chevy Apache Disc Brake Conversion?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I recently bought a '59 Chevy Apache 1/2 ton short stepside. I have a long list of modifications that I want to do in the future, one of which is converting the front-end to IFS and disc brakes. There are a good number of aftermarket kits out there from what I've seen, at least for the disc brake conversion, but they seem pretty rediculously priced for the parts/hardware that are included. I was wondering if anyone might know of a way to do this using over the counter stock GM parts? I also would like to keep the truck 6-lug so it would at least look original at first glance.

Some things I've been batting around:

The 60-66 trucks are IFS and 6-lug, but as far as I know only came with drums up front. Also the 60-66 crossmember would require some modification to fit a 454 (i think), which will be going in this truck eventually.

67-72 and 73-86 are both IFS and available with front discs, but I'm not aware of any versions that were 6-lug (2WD), although this would make mounting a big block a lot easier. And I have access to a '76 Chevy parts truck.

Ideally I would like to swap in the crossmember and front suspesion off the '76 parts truck, but I don't know how I would convert that to 6-lug.

I know the newer chevy/gmc trucks are pretty much all 6-lug, and thinking a possibility might be to swap in the 76 crossmember and control arms, and use newer model ball joints, spindles, and calipers/rotors. Anyone have any idea if the suspension geometry would be functional with this setup?

Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatlly appreciated.
