Transfer Case Fluid ?

Recommended Posts

I have an '07 Sierra NBS with a manual shift transfer case. In searching, I found plenty of info about the older trucks with manual TC's, but nothing about the NBS with manual TC's.

What fluid do I need for my transfer case? The owners manual says to use manual transmission fluid. I saw something about the Dexron III in the threads about the older TC's. Confused here...

While I got you guys here, how much fluid for the TC, and how much fluid for the differentials?

MS3DALE might chime in.

Here is what AMSOIL lists for your truck. Do you know which transfercase you have? Not that it makes a difference since they all take the same thing. You can always check your vin at the dealer to make sure.

Transfer Case,MP 1222/1225......AF6

Low Viscosity Synthetic ATF (ATLQT)

Transfer Case,MP 1226......AF6

Low Viscosity Synthetic ATF (ATLQT)

Transfer Case,MP3023......AF6

Low Viscosity Synthetic ATF (ATLQT)

fyi..........................

This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.

DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.

gmt-900

Thanks guys. I just bought some of the Auto-trac blue fluid at the local Chevy parts desk last week. Good thing I did some reading up on it before doing the fluid change! Guess I will bring that back and see if I can change it out for the right stuff.

If its a NBS '07 truck DO NOT use Auto-Trac,It either uses Dexron VI or the manual transmission fluid elcamino posted above.

Post me your VIN and I'll get your transfer cases RPO code, and I'll let you know what the correct fluid is to use.

Thanks, Rich. Here's my VIN

I ended up taking the Auto-Trac fluid back to the local Chevy dealer and trading it for the GM manual transmission fluid. I still haven't changed it yet and will wait to hear for sure.

Are the manual shift transfer cases pretty rare in the gmt-900's? The guys at the parts desk were pretty stumped by my dilemma. Finally I was like, look, I just want to trade this stuff for the manual stuff. Same price, so too easy. They were trying to say I could use the Auto-Trac fluid though because that's what all the new trucks use???

Side note... I did get my front and rear differential fluid changed.

My rear diff. doesn't have a drain plug. I had to remove the rear cover. Not that it was terribly tough, but didn't make sense to me. After the front diff. being so easy, I was expecting similar with the rear. Why no drain plug for the rear diff.?

I'm getting there. In the brief time I've had the truck, I've changed the oil, air filter, front and rear diffs., and already hauled a bunch of loads to the dump. So nice to have a truck again!!! Just the transfer case fluid, and transmission filter and fluid change, then it'll be good for a while. Good thing too because it's all been dirty stuff (almost 60K). Dang dealership I bought it from didn't even change the oil!!! Dirty rotten.... Lol

Well, you'll have to go back to the dealer, your truck has the RPO code "NQG" manual transfer case, which calls for Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid.

The only transfer case that year for the GMT900 trucks calling for manual transmission fluid is the NVG 261,RPO code "NP2".

Again...do not use AutoTrak or manual tranny fluid in your case.

Not sure,GM quit putting them in the 8.625" rear axles about 8-9 years ago,my '99 had one,my '04 did not. My current '07 has a drain plug on the rear, but it has the 9.5" rear axle due to it also having the 6-liter.

Also, make sure you use Dexron VI transmission fluid in the tranny.

Dang it! Well, good thing I'm getting this all straightened out before I do all the work. Thanks again, Rich.

I have some Dexron VI for the transmission already. From what you're saying, I can just use the same stuff for the transmission and the transfer case, right? That will keep things simple at least.

  • 3 years later...

I just picked up a 2011 GMC 1500 with the same MP 1222 RPO NQG transfer case. Does the Dex VI have to be synthetic? I have a few litres of Pennzoil Dex VI here from my 04.

As long as its Dex VI your alright,Dex VI is a semi-synthetic blend trans fluid.
