Help Keep Me From Breaking My Duramax

Recommended Posts

i have recently bought my first diesel. a 07.5 duramax that already has a PPE Hot Xcelerator Duramax LB7/LLY/LBZ/LMMr, AFE intake, and MBRP exhaust. Me being a motocross guy im going to want to do a burn out or two, when my tires are going to be thrown away. But i want to do it the RIGHT way if that's what anyone wants to call it. So how do i properly spool the turbo, and build RPM's on a diesel?

my second question is i have heard not to put the programmer up to 5 with the stock trannny (previous owner has it on 3). will the stock Allison not be able to handle it? if i do change the program to 4 or 2,1 or even stock what is the sequence for the tranny to re-learn the mapping?

having big tires is tougher on an Allison than 50hp tune, but switching tunes is equally dangerous. pick a tune and stick with it. a couple mild burnouts aren't going to cause any major damage, just keep the temps reasonable. (tranny under 220, egt under 1400 for more then 30 seconds. 1600 for 10 or 15 second bursts is the hottest u wanna see)

The duramax, with ppe on 3 can easily hit 1450* under WOT, best money spent would be a set of gauges. (or an edge monitor)

With a 6 speed you wanna keep it under 440rwhp to be safe. But even then you will run low rail pressure codes if held for too long if you don't have a lift pump. Be careful PPE measures HP at the crank not the wheel. Like someone else said, re- flashing lots is hard on stock tranny too. Level 3 is ok, be careful on the other ones. Be prepared to spend $4500 on a tranny if ur playin with HP tho. It will give up the ghost eventually.

My advice ditch that dirty PPE tuner, go for a reputable tuner and get a efi live DSP 5 switch. Look into ATP trucks, troll performance tuning. Get a lift pump, shift kit, some type of monitoring system. You start modding the dmax you need EGT gauge, boost gauge at least, edge monitor is nice it has rail pressure among other stuff. Don't push it last 1450* for to long. Also do an EGR blocker or delete, pcv re-route is wide as well...

The biggest problem with dmax is guys don't do any supporting mods before turning up power. You need a lift pump, shift kit and an EGT gauge at least or ur gonna have issues.
