Hi,

I was wondering how to identify which transmission is in my 1981 Silverado, it has a 5 L engine and tranny has 1,2,3,D,N,R,P.

Thanks

Look in your glove box at the RPO sticker, It has a bunch of 3 digit codes of numbers and letters, it should have one that says MX0, if thats the orignal transmisson. It a TH700. If it has MX1 then it came with a TH350 which was a 3 speed and means it was changed then you'd need to look at the pan to tell because there was a TH200 also that someone could have put in. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find.

Well i can tell you right now that my truck came out factory with the 700r4 and still has it in there and only has 1 and 2.and count 3 soild gears with od

So that'd be a four speed.I have at least three turbo 350's in the basement and a few 700's out of my drag truck.. 3 forward gears... three speed......four forward gears...four speed. but hey think what you want its a free country

This argument is pointless because i believe that the 700r didn't come out till 1982.At least the info I'm seeing lists 82 as the first year. And when it did come out I doubt if it would have came with a 305. Possible it's not the original engine. The OP does not say 2 or 4 wheel drive, and he may be mistaken about a 3 in the gear selector. My guess would be that is's a TH350. With 3 fwd gears.

Your right it was introduced in 81 as an 82 model year.It came in 2 and 4wd trucks and was mated to everything from the 262 to the 400. I stated before it may have been changed to the 700r4 or it could have been a 200r4 since it has a universal bolt patteren. I know the 200 was a car tranny but like I said in 30 years who knows what was stuck in and I said to use the pan to identify it, then the bullshit ****ing bullshit started. So we'll just leave it to the mods.
