I received a copy of the work slip, and noticed a few things of note. One was that along with the new valve cover they also installed an oil regulator cover along with the oil pan deflector. All my spark plugs did have some oil film on them, the dealer cleaned them and did not replace them, I wish they had replaced them since I will do it myself now.

After about a tank and half of gas my MPG has increased from 13.6 to about 15.7 according to the DIC. I'll have real number on my next fillup. I expect to be doing an oil change this week just to be sure that any metal shavings and assembly lube are removed from the engine.

All in all very happy so far with the engine.

i went through all the 5.3 "fixes" at 30k miles.... shield, lifters, oil pump, eventually pistons, rings, cam.... now i have 60k miles and it barely uses oil.... lots of time in shop and fortunately my service guy never gave me the run around... he knew the hoops to jump thru to get chevy to pay and made it happen.... he has since been promoted to service manager ... it got depressing for a while but i love the truck and am glad i hung in...

I've put about 4k miles on it so far, not a drop of oil burned, my MPG is at around 15.5 according to the DIC and I've calculated closer to 16MPG by hand as I track how muhc gas I pump into the truck. It did take lots of time to get GM to do the right thing. The truck runs great now, now I just need to replace a lower tranny line and a lower oil cooler line as they are both seeping fluid

2011 5.3l AFM, Silverado 1500 4X4, 84,000m on it. 1 to 1.5q per 3000m or right around 2q when oil life is at 25%. 70% freeway driving with 500 to 800lbs in bed. 20% off-road mostly gravel roads and 10% towing 4000 to 6000lb toys around. Complained about it couple times and was told it was normal and they I could go through the oil test thing if I like, but I work crazy hours in 4 different towns hundreds of miles apart so stopping at the dealership to do the tests was not convenient.

Un-scientific observation is I tend to see smoke out the tail pipe when first started in the morning.... Rest of the time clean, but the cats could be burning it off.

Its not just a Chevy thing.. Daughters car since new has burned 1.5 quarts per oil change for 160,000 miles now and is still going strong through 2 teenage drivers, across country college trips, big city driving etc.... same thing, manufacture sent us letter stating it was normal when we complained way back when it was still covered.

If you can live with it, then thats great, but there's nothing normal about using that much oil. At the price we pay for new vehicles, they should last till 300k with good maintenence. Just my opinion.

I agree and no I really don't like it "living with it"... but I also value my time working at my job and getting paid, not hanging around at the Chevy dealership jumping through "the GM hoops" to get something fixed in a process that seems convoluted and doesn't values me the customers time. Time value is my problem, my crazy work schedule is mine also, not GM's, they have a process for the fix, I don't agree with it and I have chosen not to do it yet but I may as I am getting close to the end of the drive train warranty, or I may trade it in before that who knows!. I've lemon lawed one truck already (not on oil consumption problems) and my experience was it was not worth the time, lost work, money, fees, it would of been cheaper to trade it in on another truck. But principles drove me to complete that and I paid dearly for it in lost jobs.

DataSponge, I hear you. Worked my truck every day. Oil consumption was about par with yours. Then one 250 mile trip, she almost drank the crankcase dry. If I hadn't been keeping a close eye, it would have ruined the engine. Chevy did fix it, after the hassle of going thru the motions. Better take time to get the consumption test. At least you'll have paperwork if it goes south fast. Hope they give you a decent trade value, because the problem is getting well known. I sold my NB style Chevy and got a good deal on a pre 07 low mileage one. She don't use a drop.

I have a 09 GMC 6.0l and change the oil when the monitor tells me to, usually about 5000-6000 miles. I always check the dipstick after oil is changed and before I bring it back in and the level usually about 1/4 to 1/2 quart low. Not bad for 5000+ miles.

How can i tell if my OLM is working? I've had about 8k on the same oil and hadn't come on yet.

I have a 2011 Silverado LTZ 4x4 with Max Trailer tow package. Great truck, I purchased it new and it always used a bit of oil from the start - about 1 Qt per 3K miles. At about 30K, started using more oil - no leaks, no smoke. Burning / using about 2 quarts every 3K miles.

I brought truck to dealership where purchased, they did an oil consumption test (takes some time, and several visits to dealership) and found that motor was consuming more oil than normal. Chevy has agreed to address the problem - will report back on the fix once complete.

If you are having similar problems, be persistent and take truck to dealer - I am thinking that Chevy will want to to the right thing and correct the issue. They did for me.

Maybe I dodged a bullet with my 2013. Deleted the AFM at 240 miles and put on a PCV oil catch can at just under 1000 miles. I have just over 5000 miles on the oil after that last change, I did it, and the level started out right at the full mark. It is now between the full and the first dent on the stick. Essentially a non issue. The PCV oil catch can has accumulated roughly 3 shot glasses of oil out of the PCV line, and that would be darn close to the amount the oil has dropped on the dip stick, more or less. So having 5000 miles and using only a minuscule amount of oil.... keeping my fingers crossed that this is the trend of the future. The farther I can stay away from my dealer for anything, the more I like it.

Update from one of my previous posts.

My brothers 2010 5.3L CC Silverado just had a bunch of engine parts replaced due to oil consumption. His truck has almost 40,000 miles now and is his daily driver. Funny thing is, my two trucks are both tuned with AFM tuned out with no issues. His truck was not tuned and used a shit load of oil in 3,000 miles. Dealership was great about the issue with no questions asked.

Don't hesitate to take your trucks in if you suspect there is an oil consumption issue. GM is taking care of people, warranty or not.
