NNBS 2007 Sierra 5.3l CC Z71. Oil consumption started around 25k miles, and has progressively gotten worse. Now has 45k miles. I have used only Royal Purple 5w30 and its starting to get REALLY expensive.

I also have a 2009 silverado with the 5.3 l with just under 30k miles and absolutely no oil consumption..

Yup the piston/ring job fixed my oil issue. And 8 new spark plugs were included :)

They charged me 80 bucks for plugs. Said mine were in good shape and GM wouldn't pay for them. Can't figure out how the rings were stuck from carbon but the plugs were fine.

did you get it back in piece?, how's she run?

The job only took 3 days. Can't tell any difference in power. The AFM is more pronounced when it kicks in, for some reason. Sounds like a small air compressor under the hood. Could be just a vibration. Have only put a couple hundred miles on it so far, so I can't comment on the oil issue just yet.

Hillbilly, did you get to see any of the job or get to see the pistons?

Yeah, I saw the heads off and some shiny new pistons. Anyway, I've put 300k so far and no consumption. By now, after an oil change the oil would have already turned color. Checked it today and it was still honey colored.

Mine is an 07 with the 5.3 and AFM. I use Mobil 1 or Penzoil Synthetic oil with a Wix oil filter. I changed my oil this weekend with 5000 miles on it. When I drained the oil into the pan, I put it back into the one of the old oil bottles. It filled the bottle back to just over 4 quarts. It takes about 6 quarts to fill the truck to the line.

I used about 2 quarts in about 5000 miles.

WOW! I can not believe what I'm reading!!! I've read all these post twice and am in shock! I have an 08, 4.8 with 23,600 and no leaks so far. I've read leaking at less tha 12k which is unbelievable! I don't even know what a AFM is but do know my old 94 Z-71 with a 350/5.7 which has been around since 1967. My old truck never burned any oil with over 200,000 miles!! it leaked a little from the rear main and valve covers but never burnt oil. I've been a Chevy guy since the 60's and hope I never have to buy a Dodge or especially a Ford but this is scary!! Maybe I need to sell it and buy another older Chevy truck with another 350 in it. The tranny went at 120k but the engine was great. Actually my old truck was a lot tighter than my new one!!

Any one else that had the piston and ring job, get plugs included?

They put in 2 plugs, because they had broken them off. That was at 75K, and I know the manual doesn't call for new ones 'til 100K.

Anyway, I've now got 15K miles on it since the pistons + rings, with no consumption. I've got about another 18K miles of motor warranty left from the extension they gave me. If it hold oil that long, I'll got ahead & keep it.

I've got a 2009 Silverado 1500 CC with the 5.3 Aluminum block\ and AFM

I've got the noisy lifters issue.

Used 3 qts of oil starting from an oil change at 42000 miles until the other day when I brought it back to the dealer.

Getting a crummy 14mpg in mixed drivng with it leaning more towards highway driving.

Some hesitation a times after letting off the gas and getting back on it a little.

My dealer has been great so far, they have acknowledged the lifter noise as being an issue. He is going to start an oil consumption test, but with the truck at 49000 miles right now, it should not use any oil at all between oil changes.

We will be starting the oil consumption test tomorrow, and I am going to go over the TSB's for the truck with the dealer to find out which ones may be applicable. We both have the goal of wanting to do any teardowns only once. I am hopefull that they will implement all the TSB's for the lifters and oil usage during this teardown.

How many of you guys were given new engines after having everything replaced failed ?

If you're engine was replaced what kind of warranty did you get on that engine ?

Has anyone noticed any difference in the MPG they are getting once the consumption issue had been fixed ?

When GM extended the Power Train Warranty how long or how many miles did the extend it by ?

Thanks

Frank

New lifters, pistons, rings and all things associated with those jobs will be covered for the full PT warranty, at least that's the way I understand it (I had all those done). Also the way I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) is if you have PT work done at 99,999 miles, those parts are warrantied for another 12K.

I dont think they will replace the engine unless the block is somehow damaged. My MPG's did not change from pre-work to after work, as a matter of fact they are really good with the BBP tune I have and the AFM off.

Sixathome,

What are your MPG before and after tune ???

Thanks

Frank

It really depends on how I drive I guess, The DIC before the tune was like IIRC read on avg 17 ish and now maybe 15 ish or so maybe higher. It can really do good on highway driving with the tune and AFM off, probably like 18's.

I had the same issue with my 2009 Silverado 1500 pick up. They changed the rings and pistons under full warranty. Oil consumption is ok. After 5k I am down about a quart. Gas mileage is at 14 mph highway and/or city. They say its normal. I didnt do anything to the AFM. Not sure I would know how and if it would void warranty.
