What To Look At For Transfer Case Problem

Recommended Posts

My 01 GMC 2500 (NON HD) has issues with the transfer case. It has the Auto-shift, and something seems to not be working correctly. When I push 4hi, I can hear the "motor" engage on the trasfer case, but the truck definitily does not have 4wd. What could cause this? I don't hear any grinding or clunking or anything, so I'm kind of clueless. Same goes for 4hi and "Auto".

Thanks for looking

Since no one has replied I will give you my half guess answer. I believe there is also a motor or electric thingamajig on the front differential that receives signal from the transfer case when you select 4x4. It engages the front axles. Maybe the motor quit on you. Good luck.

Hmmm, interesting. Anyone else able to confirm or deny this? I feel like it might be something simple to fix since I haven't ever heard a grind of any sort.

Appreciate it Rad!

There are two places that might be the source.

1) front actuator (this is the part that engages the front axles with the front driveshaft). Common problem on earlier GMs, not sure on 2001.

2) the transfer case. There are the motors that do the shifting when you push the button and then there are the encoders. I have heard that the encoders are common problem.

I lied, a 3rd source might be your switch.
