Exhaust for '01 HD?

Recommended Posts

You could use the existing stainless pipe and just replace the muffler with a 2-in/2-out less restrictive muffler.  There are some mufflers out there that are not an exact fit but are close enough that an exhaust shop could put it on with no trouble....

I put two 40 series Flowmasters on the HD with a 6.0L and it made a huge difference in the performance of the truck.. It rev's quicker, thus producing better acceleration...I like the sound and I didn't seem to lose any real low-end torque.

What ever you do...DO NOT straight pipe your truck...I made this mistake, yeah it's loud and people will notice you but your truck loses all low-end grunt....it kicks your torque band up about 500-600rpms which is huge when trying to move a trailer or a heavy load...with the stock exhaust I was able to take off in second and destroy the tires...with the straights I was riding the clutch more...with the Flows I can take off in second but not as fast as the factory exhaust....but I also upped my tire size from 245 to 285's so that hurts a liitle too...

Just my $0.02

Can you tell me about what this costs and give me a description of the sound, my dad had a '99 with the 4.8 and a glasspack and it was way too loud. Does the 40 series give it a nice rumble and sound without be obnoxious? Thanks for everyones input.

Gerry,

It's all in the "ears" of the beholder!!!  Some love the 40 series and others say they are way too loud!!!

Personally I would put the 70 series on my truck if I were to put on a Flowmaster.  I have heard them before and they are louder than stock and have a nice tone under power, with very little cab resonance.

I had a true dual custom setup done. I used 30" thrush packs with 2.5" pipe out to the corners and shorty chrome tips. It is very mellow at idle and cruise speed. But put your foot in it and people WILL look at you. Had it done at a local shop for $231.00.  :thumb:

The 40 series is the original flowmaster sound...It is very noticeable inside and outside of the cab...I like the sound personally you can go to the flowmaster website www.flowmastermufflers.com and listen to a 350 in I think an El Camino to get an idea of the sound....the glasspack on your dad's truck is definitely going to give you that aggressive sound you want alas in 3 months when the packing blows/burns out it will essentially be a straight pipe....I really like the sound of the exhaust plus my GM dealer informed me that it does void the factory warranty which is a biggy for me because I bought the 5/100,000 Unlimited warranty....

oh yeah price

I paid $65.00 per muffler 3" in 3" out

and $35 to have them installed

I'm going to have the tail pipe re-done to acheive true duals..I just used my stock tail pipe.

Replacing exahust won't void your warranty!

That's just a dealer trying to be a d*ck.

The only way it can void your warranty is if it can be proven that the exhaust caused the part in question to fail.  Of which, I highly doubt any cat-back will do.

I have a gibson on my S10 V6 4.3. I don't think its loud enough. So I am more than likely not putting on my 2500HD 6.0l. The gibson has a great sound to it when under a good amount of throttle. Have to be working the engine hard to get the sweet tone out of it...

How did you get your truck to smoke the tires like it does in the picture?  My 6.0L won't even squawk on take-off!/quote]

Brake torque it, till they start spinning. Let off the brake, nail the gas and try to keep it straight!!  :thumb:
