Allison Transmission Review

Recommended Posts

I like them. The ratios are split nicely for the Dmax, it shifts good, and the grade braking is unbeatable. There's times that it shifts a bit "goofy", but a person needs to keep in mind it is a truck transmission. I'm very happy with mine!!  :thumb:  :thumb:

Some of the early programming issues kind of tarnished the image a bit, but as time has passed, GM has been releasing revised software which has greatly improved the function of the Allison.

I'll sum it up;

For towing/hauling = Fantastic, a godsend, great gearing, etc, etc.

For performance, I.E. raw acceleration and everyday driving = SUCKS!!!!

Why?  It robs the engine of so much usable power and I feel it shifts too fricken soon.  Another 500 - 1,000 rpm in each gear would be nice.  Then there's T.M., but all GM trucks suffer that curse!

CMNTMXR81-What's TM?

I like my Alli; except for the fact that the valves in it are REALLY noisy when the tranny's cold and you first start to drive it in the morning.  I figured that I'd live with it since its a heavy duty tranny.  For a while my TCC was making a noise during lockup, but a TCM reflash solved that problem by about 95%.

As for durability, we'll see-only 14K miles on it so far-

Torque Management.  It basically retards timing during shifts to smooth out the shift itself.

On our Allison trans equipped trucks, I think there are two controllers for it.  One in the PCM and one in the BCM.  At least this is the info I've gleaned off of one of the LS1Edit people (Carputing, Inc.).

When I get a chance, I'm gonna hook up a TechII to see if it'll let me tamper, err, adjust it.  :lol:
