Transmission Bolt Strippage

Recommended Posts

I was trying to change my automatic tranny fluid today on my 2001 Silverado 1500 and I could not break the threads loose on the transmission pan drainage bolt. I used a 15mm socket which fit perfectly but soon after cranking down it started to slip and round off the bolt. I then tried a Crescent wrench (don't ask me why but I did), still with no luck. Then I got manly and busted out the vise grips (again....don't ask me why but I did), again with no luck. Now the head of the bolt is in shreds. I want to know is this common? Is it really that hard to unthread that bolt? And since it has no flat corners anymore, how do I get it off?  ???

1.)  Yes it is typical for this bolt to be difficult to remove.

2.)  Removal...try using a dremel tool and cutting a slot in the bolt, then use a LARGE flat blade screw driver.

If that doesn't work, remove the pan and try the grip from the inside.  Maybe use an "easy-out".

If you cna't get it out before the pan comes off you'll have to remove the pan and let some of the fluid drain out the sides of the pan.  A messy job, but what can you do?

After the pan is off, try drilling straight through the pan drain plug with a small drill bit.  You can then use a stuck screw remover, commonly called "easy outs" around here, to get the screw out.  When drilling out the plug, it should weaken it enough to get it out.  Just be careful and don't drill at an angle or use a bit that is too big, so you don't damage the threads on the pan itself.

Oh, be sure you have a replacement plug before you start.  :jester:

If your not sure what "easy outs" are, just let me know and I can find some pics for you.

You know what? I was so frustrated with it I never even thought of those ideas (cut a slot or use easy out). Welp, thanks. At least I know all is not lost just yet. One more question.....I looked in the owners manual for the transmission fluid capacity and there is not one mention of it. Does any one know how many quarts I'll need?
