Torque Management

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a way to fully remove all of the torque management?  I installed a Superchip micro tuner because it was supposed to disable a portion of the torque management.  This helped, but my truck still doesn’t feel like 300hp (6.0L). :)

I say this because I still have my 1994 chevy p/u 350, auto, & 3.42 gears.  It only has 215-230 hp (stock w/ hypertech chip) and peels the back tires on command.  Now, with 4.10 gears and 300 hp, I should at least be able to screech the tires.

The truck tows fine and has plenty of power when towing, but as a daily driver getting 12mpg I feel like I should at least have the satisfaction of hearing the tires squeal every so often. :D   I know that a supercharger (pricey at $4k) would fix the problem, but my wife (accountant :D ) will not let me have one any time soon!

I believe that in an old thread (I can’t seem to find it again) tbyrne was going to have the torque management removed in his sub.  Did that ever take place?  If so, did it make a noticeable difference and what did it cost?

Thanks

:(

To remove the dreaded torque management you need to re-program the PCM in a very serious fashion - LS1Edit or one of the guys who do this for a living - Ed Wright, MTI Houston ... etc - the off the shelf units don't get at the issue.

Once you have it removed you will see "real" differences. :D

Speaking from personal experience firsthand as well as other members of the MFBA that have had problems, DON'T LET ED WRONG..err, WRIGHT TOUCH YOUR PCM!!!!  I wouldn't let him tune my Briggs & Stratton.

It seems he did decent with LT1/LT4 and other old school SBC engines, but when it came to LS1's, he hit a brick wall.  Our new Vortec engines are derived from the LS1, so that's why I offer my bit of personal advice.

Well, I could tell you "yes" then you go to a GM dealer and ask them to remove it only to find out it can't be done.  Then you'd be pissed at me, in which case you'd need to get in the long line to my left and wait your turn to take it out on me.  :D

Seriously though, it all depends on your VIN#.  Once they hook up the TechII, it then reads your VIN# and all the parameters of the PCM/BCM and that's what determines what can and can't be changed.

As an example from personal experience, I had two identical 3.4L DOHC V6's in my driveway.  However, hooking up the TechII, there was different parameters it read for each PCM therefore I could only tamper with certain things on each vehicle due to this.  The only difference between the two was that one was a Lumina and one was a Monte Carlo.

Same can be said here, add to that revisions and changes between model years.  So a '99 5.3 you may be able to eliminate TM and then GM picked up that people were doing this and on '00 5.3's you may not be able too.  Hypothetically speaking of course.

Only way to know is to hook it up.   :D

OK, here's how you can make it up to me...come by the house with a Tech II this Saturday or Sunday and check it out for me.  j/k :thumb:

From what you are saying, I am thinking the likelyhood of being able to do it on an '02 5.3 GMC is slim to none.

Ya never know.  I wish I could afford my own.  Even if I could, a re-manufactured one would cost me around $1,200.  Of course I'd have to go back once a week to get updates on it too.
