500 miles

Yet another update on the new engine  :D

After a little less than a week of "easy" driving I managed to reach my goal of 500 miles and my first oil change. The oil was still fairly clean, as I would expect, and the drain plug magnet was loaded with shavings...expected as well.

Gas milage has increased about 10% from what I can tell, oil pressure is outstanding from startup to shut down... I now wonder if I had a clogged oil pump on the old motor  :uhoh:

It seems I don't have to get into the pedal as much for accelleration or cruising speed, and OD speeds seem to be peppier as well.

I did find out from my mechanic that I have a couple problems to iron out still-

1. I have a "surge" at idle which could be caused by fuel, either the pump has to be replaced ot the TB unit needs to be cleaned at the vaccuum lines. He says they are noted for carbon build-up everywhere for those years. I think I will have the system cleaned with one of those fuel system cleaners at PepBoys.

2. Coil is also know to be a culprit to crap out as well. Thinking about replacing it with and MSD coil to go with my 8.5mm Super wires. Any suggestions? Should I stay with stock?

3. EGR ports were plugged with carbon in the intake, I still have to replace or clean the EGR. I think this gets cleaned with the fuel system cleaner???

I'm hooking up the boat and heading north for some fishing for the next 4 days. I can't expect to make any observations with the boat hooked up performance wise, but will report back once again now that I can put my foot to the floor  :nono:
