4l60e Transmission Longevity Good News I Hope

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

We have had posts about engine longevity. How about telling us about how long your 4l60e transmission has lasted and what you do to maintain it.

My own experience is flawless. I have 160,000 miles on mine with the only problem being a leak at the output seal which I fixed in 20 minutes and $1.97 for the new seal. I do race the occasional Ford. I change the fluid in the pan every 50k with a new filter. Regular trans fluid.

The only transmissions I have broken were a couple of powerglides and that was a long time ago. I change the fluid in mine every 30,000 miles. Overkill...maybe but I don't have any problems. I have put 250 thousand miles on one 700R4 with no issues. It had a shift kit in it as well. I don't put many miles on my truck since I retired so this one may last me for a long while.

The guy who bought my old '99 has over 160,000 miles on it with no issues,It had 83,000 miles on it when I traded it/he bought it.

I changed the fluid and filter a few times while I had it.

In my old 98, the transmission went out at right at 105,000 miles and I had the dealer do perform the transmission service when I had it in for some warranty work at about 60k miles. My dad had a 97 and his trans went out at about 100,000 miles. He had the service done at 50K miles. The guy that we used for the rebuild said that he had rebuilt a bunch of the 4L60s and most of them he had done had gone out around 100k miles.

I've got 203,000 on my 2003 4l60E... Changed the fluid and filter @ 100K. 3000 miles overdue for the second change... LOL

Still pulls well!! Never slips and is smooth as silk! I'm crossing the fingers she lasts to 250K. Then I'll treat her to a rebuild, maybe some Corvette servos, a tune and a new motor....

i still am wondering why the tranny on my 2003 Suburban 5.3 4L60 was completley blown. really kinda sucked but in the long run, i have a brand spankin' new 4l60 in my burb and it shift perfectly and smoothly now with 150,000 miles on it and i love it. engine has never ever been touched and dosent tick or knock or anything. amazing.

on the other hand, my 4L60 in my 2001 Silverado 5.3 4L60 is pretty rough and not too smooth but it gets the job done. i do give it a fair share of abuse. lots of heavy acceleration and braking and drifting and offroading. would not be suprised if the tranny goes at 100k.

my 2004 silverado which i just got and know nothing about has a 4.8 4L60 and exactly 80,000 miles and it shift perfectly and smoothly too.

You gotta treat 'em right bro!

I just put the first wrench to my 4.8 last month. Put a new water pump on it. But other than routine maintenance, that's it!

Easy on the gas and easy on the brakes.... They will last a LOT longer that way. Believe me!

I had about 126k on my '99 silvy when it was totaled. Had the fluid changed about every 35k miles.

I have a personal friend who has 280k on his '00 Silverado (just asked him about the mileage) and no tranny problems. I'm not sure what maint he has done.

I have heard almost no complain about transmission from owners of gmt800, also I have read people advising to try get gmt900 with 4speed!!

But what about GMT900 07-08 4L60E? you will say it is the same tranny but doubt it's same quality ... and those of us who plan to keep it for a long time, what is the best upgrade mode? 4l65 or what?

2000 Silverado 168,000 Miles.. Tranny still going strong. I find if you change your fluid (NEVER FLUSH! THE FLUID) and change the filter with some regularity they last long.. However, like everything, you occasionally get a lemon. My old truck had similar mileage before I traded it and it's 4l60E was good too.

I was talking to a mechanic and he said he rarely sees anyone go in for tranny filter and oil anymore. Everytime he drops a pan is because there is a problem. and he normally concludes that worn tranny fluid caused the problem.

external tranny cooler, Dexron VI, Transmission temperature gauge. These are good upgrades imho
