Tuners/custom Tunes Vs Dyno Tuning

so, I'm probably the famous whiner of the forums now.. I certainly hope not. It's generally not like me.. but if you've seen my thread on this topic concerning the power of my truck I've decided to go with a tune.

My initial desicion was a blackbear tune using the autoCAL device, which after shipping and all should be right at about $600.

at the same time, seeking external advice I found my old corvette performance shop is a corsa retailer, and contacted them about exhaust. They came back with some interesting things but also said that for the same price as my BB tune using the autoCAL I can have them do a dyno/drive ECM/TCM tune.

The company is MTI racing and they're rather well known among corvette communities as some of the best LS based techs out there. i'm familiar with the folks there and have had a chance to tour their facility.. basically they're a racing team that opened a shop. They sometimes shut down to go racing.. so I believe they know what they're doing when it comes to LS performance.

So.. I suppose my question is this.. what would you do? Go with a BB tune using the autoCAL or go in person to a race shop like this and have them dyno tune it? Their shop is like an hour from my house and like 30 minutes from work.

thanks yall.

Depends on the dyno and the tuner. I would not get tuned on an inertia dyno- waste of $$$. Also, do they allow for tune updates?

A dyno tune (with a post street tune) would be optimal for folks with modifications, street tunes good for folks with minor mods or stock- those would be the best bets.

inertia dyno as opposed to what?

tbh I am leaning towards the autoCAL for the fact that I can recalibrate the ecu on the fly w/o a shop being involved.. but it would be nice for the tuners to be local. They can re-tune and do mods in their shop for a nominal fee.

For tuning, you want a load bearing dyno. The inertia dynos are just for numbers (ie. WOT runs).

The nice thing with the AutoCal, is your tune is still being built off of the data from your vehicle, so it is a street tune in a handheld. Also, you aren't charged an arm and a leg for tune updates.

The big thing is that the dyno is not doing the tuning, a person has to do the tuning- make sure the person knows what they are doing!

IMO just get a tune from a tuner and get a street tune for every day driving most TUNERS that DYNO tune do not give it that extra for everyday driving

It was with my 06 TBSS that I experienced this w/street tuning going to track meets and meeting other guys. On the track with basic same mods(e-fan/exhaust/tune) 1/4 miles #'s where the same. And when people at meets drove or drove in my truck liked the manners of how truck shifted and performed and had mad the switch to my tuner.
