Good photos as usualy JP.  Do you guys have to do anything special to help the cattle cope with this heat wave?  Or has is been too bad out your way?

Been in the low 90's for the past 10 days or so here in WV.  Perfect for cutting wood and mowing grass! :)

This summer has been awful, hot and humid every day, and it never gets better.  Not much a guy can do for cattle other than make sure they have access to shade and water.  We have both.  Here you see some of them heading to the creek to cool off (I was on top of a corn bin).

About three weeks ago we did lose a young cow due in part to the heat.  Mid-morning we saw her not acting quite right, but due to the heat we decided to wait until night to get her in and look her over, by 2PM she was dead.  Dad and I still have zero clue what was wrong, but heat was a contributing factor we are sure.  Just the way the dice rolls at times on a farm, never know what is going to happen, good or bad.

What kinda name is 58 for a cow. What ever happened to Bossy and names like that.

Well, every cow has a number for ease of identification.  With just about every cow in our herd I can tell from a distance which one it is, be it 31 (good Maine cow, always has a great calf), 18 (only brown and white one, easy to remember), 52 (young Angus cow, throws calves that make money), whatever.

There is one cow out there that does have a name though.  One of mine is May.  I raised her from birth as a bucket calf, and when the time came dad didn't have the heart to sell her (such a mean thing to do to a 9 year old) so she went back in the herd.  Has turned into a pound producing cow.  Here I am walking alongside her as she grazes, still very tame, at any time I can walk up and scratch her.
