255/85/16

Recommended Posts

I HAVE AN 04 YUKON XL 2500 8.1 RIGHT NOW WITH 265/75/16 E,S ON FACTORY ALUM 16X6.5 AND ITS LOOKS GOOD. I PLAN TO GO UP JUST A LITTLE WITH A 1" OR 11/2 BLOCK IN THE BACK WITH NEW TORSION KEYS IN THE FRONT.

MY BIG QWUSTION IS 285/75/16 OR 255/85/16 FOR WINTER SEASON. I LOVE THE 285,S AND USED THEM ALOT, BUT FOR THE WINTER AND ON THAT SKINNY WHEEL IM THINKING THE 255/85 WOULD BE BETTER, BUT ID REALLY LIKE TO SEE THE ON A TRUCK OR SUV FIRST,.

CAN ANY OF YOU GUYS USING THIS SIZE PLEASE SEND ME SOME PICS AND/OR COMMENTS. THANKS SO MUCH 570-656-2466

He was talking about all caps.

I had 255/85's BFG MT's on my 2000 Silverado (see pic). I did not run them in the winter because the mud terrain was sketchy on ice and I ran the 285 AT's in the winter.

Thanks for the reply, they look good. So really they are slightly taller than a 285/75 but the same width as a 265/75 correct?

Overall I liked them much better than the 285's for 3/4 of the year. I did not like the MT's in the winter. Would I go with that size again, yep.

Pros: Weight less, Cost less, taller, looks, less rock chips (wider tires caused more rock chips)

Cons: ice traction/stopping

I run 235/85/16 and they are fairly tall but I like them. They do drop the engine rpm at crusing rpm's. But then again I have a 4.10 rear gear.

thanks, me to its a 4l85e with 4:10, so besides the good look, im trying to go taller to knock down the rpms. i thought 235/85,s were the same height as a 245 just skinnier

Correct, They may differ slightly between different manufacturers but basically, the 285/75 and the 255/85 are 33" tires.

I tow heavy frequently so I didn't want to mess around with air pressures w/ the 285/75's on the factory wheels. I installed 255/85's on my truck and like them, the only problem I found is choices are very limited in that size.

here are mine the day they were installed. They fit fine with no modifications!

One other side note too. By going up in size, I was able to drop to a Load range D (65 psi) from the E (80 psi) and still have the same carrying capacity but get a better ride IMO.

Here is the OE tires for comparison029.jpg

My brother just installed these and He likes them. They will probably be my next choice aswell

I run 255/85R16 Cooper ST’s on my 2005 K2500HD project truck, which measure 33.2 x 10. I am real happy with them so far and actually like them better than the 285’s on my 2001 K2500HD.

Larry,

Are the cooper's loud? My current tires are pretty aggressive and NOISEY. It appears that the tires I wanted Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT are no longer made in this size. My brother is very satisfied with these, they ride nice and a very quiet.

Thanks

Ah, probably no louder than BFG KO’s. Pretty hard to tell though over the resonance of the Flowmaster. :puke:

Saw a set in person yesterday on a jeep and something about them just looked smaller than i imagined, maybe becasuse of the skinnyness, they were definitly taller than the 285/75 by 3/4-1" but at first glance you would definitly think they were 245/75 or 235/85. thanks guys for your input
