What do you have planned for your truck

Recommended Posts

Since it's been exactly 1 month since anyone's posted anything in the forum, I thought I"d start something here.

A few things I have planned to do to my truck over the course of the next year or so...

- Interior restoration - consisting of a new high-back bucket-bench w/ center fold-down seat and new seatbelts, new 82-87 style dash cap, wood grain instrument bezel and new door panels w/ wood grain, and repaint the metal surfaces.  Approximate cost: $1200

- Rear-end rebuild - To fix that pinion bearing and get rid of that vibration

- Ignition upgrade - New distributor assembly, wires & plugs, and timing set just right.

- Oil Leak Fix - Front & Rear main oil pan seals & valve cover gaskets.

- I'm still looking to do that 700R4 swap in the distant future.   Maybe when the engine's finally due for a rebuild I"ll yank the ENTIRE drive train and drop a new engine, 700R4, 203 Transfer case and new driveshafts in there.

- MAYBE put a 6" ez-ride lift in there and ditch the 3" 'roughest-ride-in-the-world" lift that's in there now.

Thats all I can think of.  Everything else I've wanted to do to the truck is done.

Well, one of these days I am going to get this damn 454 in my 78’ K10.  The problem is I have been putting a lot of time and $$ into my house as far as landscaping and fencing plus 80 some hours a week into work while flying all over the country.  Now that I have laid a pallet of sod the city has put us on water restriction.  To make matters worse, I put my self on probation for toys for the truck due to a very very ugly traffic ticket I got in the land of entrapment..  Once I find out what that is going to cost me and recoup from the shock I will resume with my big block swap probably sometime this winter.

It has been a very depressing summer here in Southern Colorado.  Our mountains are on fire, we have had 6 straight days of 100+ degree weather with high winds, we have no water for irrigation because our greedy state government sold pretty much all the water rights to Kansas on down stream and I am in trouble with Johnnie Law.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Larry.  I know it sucks.  It seems like once things start going wrong, they keep going wrong for a while (I refuse to use the cliche' for this).

The news makes the fires out there look horrific.  I hope everything pans out with them and the firefighters get ahold of it soon.  I have a few friends in Denver that I worry about.

Long time since I've stopped by here...

I am hoping to get my replacement Inner and outer front fenders onto the truck.  Of course, I've been saying that for over a year now.  But I like to think of it as a summer plan.

Also want to change my ignition, get rid of the Electronic Spark control, get a new feul pump, and rebuild the carb, or replace it.  U-joints in the rear driveshaft.  Get a new vent window assembly and install that.  (Looks simple enough).  Install a decent sound system.  (Blown speakers have NO bass sound :P )

Lots of little rust spots to sand down and repair, before they get worse.  Maybe get some better bumpers on the truck, I saw a nice set on a truck in the junkyard just the other day.

Just realizing that the summer isn't going to be long enough....

First I should probably get after the small rust spots that are appearing at the rear upper corners...this is a place that I have seen severe rust on other old Suburbans, so I need to get it under control before it gets nasty.

Other than that I will just fix anything that goes wrong....but since I have already completely re-built the suspension (including shocks, swaybars, bushings, ball-joints, tie-rods, and tires), did a valve job last year, have new u-joints, new exhaust, new radiator, AC converted to R-134, rebuilt carb, new intake, new ignition, new headers...shoot, I need to just quit for awhile and drive the thing.

But...sooner or later I'm going to pull her off the road for a full repaint and freshen up the bottom end of the engine to match the heads.  But that probably won't be within a year.

Been working WAY too much this year...

I plan on selling my 83 Chevy that I have had for almost 20 years now. It won't be easy but its got to go, not enough room to store anymore toys. I special ordered this truck back when I worked at a GM dealer. It's had to find one with a factory 4 in the floor, it will be like parting with a member of the family. I do look forward to a new truck though. I hope they have that knocking problem cured for the 03 models.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well for the 83 we are currently putting in a 350 Crate Motor.  We've bought some chrome/polished aluminum pieces for it: Pulley covers, timing chain cover, valve covers - these are especially cool with engraved flames in them & oil pan.

In the coming year I want to redo the interior, with new chrome gauge covers, new dash mat, new seats, new carpet etc.  I'm not sure if we are going to get it painted, as the paint is not in to bad of a condition.  We are going to get the bed liner sprayed in as well.  I'll keep you guys updated, but we just want to start with the basics first.
