Anybody here messed with....

Recommended Posts

Have any of you guys here done much work with the old GM (Chevy) Inline 6's?  Not so much the smaller CI engines, but the 292 in particular.  I know the 292 is a tough old motor, and makes good low end torque.  But have any of you guys here worked on one to get some good power out of it, or even known someone who has?

I know it can be done, but for more $$$ then the typical small block upgrade.  Just looking for some personal experience.

I am not really sure why, but I have this idea to buy a late 70's K30 later down the road and put a built 292 in there.  You would have a damn tough drivetrain with the 14bolt FF out back, Dana 60 in front, SM465, NP 205, and then a tough old I6 under the hood.  And yes, I do know I'm strange.  LOL

Haven't done anything with the I6 myself, but there's a company called Clifford Performance that specializes in sixes, especially straight sixes.  You can get aluminum intakes, headers, all kinds of go-fast goodies!  I'm sure they're on the web somewhere...their logo is 6=8, that should tell you how they think.

And yes, you are weird...;-)

Yep, Clifford Performance is on the web.  I've been browsing around there site alittle bit, found some good looking stuff.

Looks like a 40% increase in RWHP shouldn't be to hard to accomplish as all they say you need to do is use their headers, 4 brl carb and intake, camshaft, and increase the compression ratio.  With the torque those I6's put out, an increase of 40% ought to make for a good running truck....

But a 40% increase, if I'm anywhere near correct in my recolections, will put both HP and Torque right in the ballpark with a stock 4bbl 350, after a huge investment in effort and money.  I like the sounds the old 6's make, but other than that Idon't understand the appeal.  I had a friend that built the h&!! out of a "blue flame" in a Chevy II...split manifolds, 4bbl, cam, head work, stroker crank etc.  What he achieved was a car that ran as fast as a stock 350 Camaro for a lot more money, burned more fuel (leaded premium) and lacked cold start drivability and durability.  But it sure did sound cool when he romped on it, and on overrun (coasting in gear) it made some great "popcorn" sounds.

I'll just note that his next project car was a later Nova that already had a V-8!   :)
