straight across for a 5-7 year old newer truck in immaculate condition if the opportunity arose?

 

Despite all the problems I've had with mine, I'd still keep it.  There's tons and tons of newer trucks around, but not nearly as many nice, well kept classics.

 

Since this forum has been very slow the last couple weeks, I decided to liven it up a bit :)

Man, this is a no-brainer for me...I was driving a brand new '99 GMC X-cab, fully loaded with the 5.3 V8.  Then I found my '76 Suburban.  Paid cash for the Sub, spent 4-5 months upgrading, repairing, and tweaking it, then dumped the '99 to make the old truck my daily driver.  It wasn't about money, although I like the thought that my only debt is my house mortgage.

It would take an insane amount of money for me to sell my Sub.  I had a guy call me from Austin wanting to buy it...I wouldn't even put a price on it, I told him "crazy money".  I guess he chickened out, I never heard from him again.

New trucks are comfy cruisers, but I would miss the character of my old Sub and it's 454.

Yup.

I would trade the '86 "Burban" straight across for a '92 to '95 one in a heart beat.  Just the increase in fuel efficiency and power that TBI added would make it worth the swap.  Although mine is in great condition, it is starting to have "old truck syndrome" problems pop up more often.  Just had both power window motors on the front replaced.  I like the "classic" body style better too (is it '92 to '99? - looks like my '94 C3500 and '96 C1500).

After 218K miles though you would expect thode kinds of things to happen.  Doors and windows need to have all weatherstripping replaced (wind noise while driving), and some other rattles and squeaks are getting louder.It is still very reliable though.  Replaced the engine 37K ago and the tranny was rebuilt about 28K ago.  Rear end (3.08) is still quiet, and the front and rear A/C still works pretty much as it was designed to.

I really like the new trucks, especially a single cab 2500hd. However, that is allot of money to go into debt for.

 

I've decided to find a straight 72-78 chevy 3/4 ton, buy a kick butt GM crate motor, rebuild the trans ect.

 

Then I will have a durable truck for a long time to come. No smog hassles, less parts to break, less to insure, register and most of all its got THICK metal. God I love how thick the metal is on the bed. Can't find that in a new truck.

I've got he 2002 and the 1951.  I'd give up the 2002 first, it's only going to depreciate no matter what I spend on it.  But it's the daily transportation and I can replace it with whatever, the '51 on the other hand, I figure anything within reason, I'll be able to get back out of it and it's not going to depreciate.

Just bought the 2002 2500HD CC/SB..

My oldest "Classic" is my grandfathers 1964 GMC 3/4 ton. with only 57,xxx original miles. Just got it going a couple of years ago after 20 years of "storage". Would take a lot to make me part with it.

Newest "Classic" is an 89 SUB. Yes, it is "FOR SALE"!!!!

Nope. I have a 51 year old truck that could be used as a daily driver, sans the slow (vacuum) wipers. I don't drive it in the salt and sand, that's a waste of a lot of time in the future.

When the Sun is shining, I drive the wheels off of her!
