Why can't I find

Recommended Posts

Why does it have to be so hard to find an older 4x4 pickup to fix up?  I kind of like the 67-72 body style (prefer the 60-66), but I don't want really want a C10 or C20.  I see alot of these pickups sitting around at farmsteads (2 of them are at my uncles farm) that with some work could be restored.  But I never, never see a 4x4 version of these trucks.  Is that because they have all been snatched up, or are they just that rare?

Speaking of my uncles farm, I should get some pics of the old trucks just sitting around up there.  I think you classic guys would like them.  He has 2 60 or 61 GM pickups that are definitely in shape to fix up.  My dad even said something about taking them both and working on them.  Only problem is that some dang tresspasser seem to think they can come in and steal stuff of these trucks.  Really pisses me off!

I wonder how hard it would be to convert a C20 over to four wheel drive?  I believe all the two wheel drive trucks from that era were coil sprung in the back????  What kind of suspension setup did they use on the front and rear of the four wheel drives?  I'm not real familiar with them, just throwing out some ideas.  Maybe somebody offers a kit to swap a Dana 60 under the front of one?

Thats usually how things work out for me Torque Junkie.  They are always too far away, or too much money.

heres the difference...like was said before, old 4x4s were used as beaters (this same thing happens with people looking for old crew cab fords) so many have gone to truck heaven.  the 2wds were not as abused and did not do as much heavy work, and therefore they are in better shape now (most of them).  also GM did not make nearly as many 4x4s as they did 2wds.

Hey Kansas,

One of my buddies that builds street rods for a living currently has an orange  71 GMC K2500 on hand that the owner can’t afford to pay for the work performed.  The truck is mostly stock with a SM456 4 speed manual/NP205, Eaton full-floating rear axle, paint, etc.  It even has the original 16 inch spit rims BUT it has a fuel injected Vortec 5700 engine from a 97’ K truck lurking under the hood.   Somebody did a hacksaw and chisel job on the fuel injection swap and my buddy straightened out the wiring harness and diagnostics now the owner can’t afford to pay for the repairs.  It has been sitting at his place for several months.  The truck runs awesome and is fully OBD II compatible.   My buddy asked me if I was interested in it but since I have a couple too many projects on hand like my 454 swap in my 78’K10 and the my latest acquisition, 72’ C20, I know the boss (wife) would kill me if I even mentioned it to her especially since I have been crying for another old K5 Blazer.

The truck is located in the Pueblo, Colorado area so it isn't all that far from you.  Let me find out how much they have into it and the details of acquiring a title by way of a mechanical lean.

What happed to that early 70’s 4x4 that you talked about a few months ago?
