Excellent junkyard score...

Recommended Posts

Went to a local junkyard today looking for a centercap for the old '76 (thanks NTB for not tightening the bolts!!).  Anyway, this import junkyard had a pretty nice looking '88 Suburban out front that they were parting out.  No nice centercaps, but I got to snooping, and the '88 had a 40 gallon gas tank!! I've been wanting one but they are at least ? from JC whitney and others.  So I talk to the guy, he wanted ?...hmmm....hey, look at those nice stainless steel drip rails...I'll give ya ? for the drip rails and the gas tank, and you guys pull it all off.  DEAL!

So I get it home, it's about half of gas, good looking gas (pumped some into a glass jar first).  So I fill the '76 about half up with gas...that's at least ? worth of gas.  Then I pull the sending unit from the tank, nice fuel pump.  So if I ever want to convert to Fuel Injection I've already got the sending unit and probably a good fuel pump, too.

Plus the nice looking stainless for all four passenger doors, and the rear door too.

Pretty nice snag for ?, I think...

Just had to share!!

I always liked going to the yard to see what was there, usually went with a small list of things I was looking for, and would end up coming home with a ton of other stuff that I just happened upon.

I need to find a new one to hunt though, a few that I used to frequent have closed up.

I hear ya about the closing of local junk yards.  We just had 2 yards go up in smoke in the last month.  To bad they were the 2 that I frequented the most.  Dammit!

My mom works for one that was just bought by ford.  They are small and do mainly insurance stuff.  We basically get whatever we need for free.

Also they send brand new trucks, expeditions, excursions with less than 10miles to them to be dismantled and sold for parts.  They didnt pass inspection.  Id take a whole truck even if it was a ford.

There's a junkyard about an hour west of Houston that I have been wanting to visit for awhile.  I met the guys at the Del Mar swap meet in Houston, they had pictures of the yard and a partial list of cars/trucks...WOW!  They are one of the few yards I know of that still keeps the old stuff around instead of just crushing it.  They also have some newer stuff, and overall they have hundreds of cars.  There are some big yards in Waco, I bought a used quarter panel for my '71 Javelin back in '90 from one of them.

Personally, I love a junkyard outing, even if it just to the local Pick-A-Part to scrounge for bits and pieces.
