Insurance companies

Recommended Posts

Looking for an Insurance company that will provide full coverage for my 1974 Blazer.  The company I have now (among other big name companies) will only offer liability for me.  I heard there are companies that insure classic cars, older vehicles and so on.  With what I have done to this thing, liability just won't cut it.

Do you guys know of anyone?......Thanks

Welcome 74*blazer,

This may not apply, but my friend bought a '70 mustang convertible this spring.  He insures all his vehicles through "Electric Insurance" (so do I).  I think he hung classic plates on it, and insured it for something like $12-$14K.  I don't think he pays much more than $150/year, but is limited to milage etc...

I use State Farm and pay:

$45/mo for my 87 Ranger 4X4

$36/mo for my 77 Chevy 4X4

$27/mo for my 67 Camaro

I have full coverage with all the extra crap I'll never use w/$250 deductable.  Neither of these vehicles are registered as classics.

Also, I'm 26, single dad (discount), with no ticket in the past 5 years (another discount).

There are some companies that specialize in insurance for classic and specialty cars and trucks.  I use Hagerty for my Corvette, they are a little more relaxed on the number of miles you can drive.  All the classic insurance companies have some special restrictions, which are typically about the same.

1.  Must provide proof of liability insurance on another vehicle at the same address (presumably your daily driver).

2.  Must keep the classic in a locked garage at your home address.

3.  Must be over 25 years of age.

4.  Coverage is limited to driving to/from shows, club meetings, and some pleasure driving, but you are not supposed to leave the car at the grocery store, restaurant, etc.  Some are more strict on this than others.

5.  I think some require you to be a homeowner, so if you're renting you may be screwed.

The upside is that the coverage is dirt cheap.  I have my Corvette insured for nearly $30K and it's about $230 a year with a $100 deductible.

I think you can reach Hagerty at www.hagerty.com

Thanks guys! :)

Once I get back to the states I can check into it a little further.  It does help since I have 2 other vehicles with full coverage, I'm 34 and own the house.  Working overseas may benifit as far as the mileage goes (since I am not there) but living in Arizona the weather is too good not to drive it.  It's still a work in progress, i.e. custom paint, custom interior and a bunch more stuff to polish on the way, but when I'm home I love to drive it.
