66 3/4TON Steering column

Recommended Posts

I have got a 1966 GMC 3/4 ton. I was wondering what steering column fits the best or whats a good one to use. I would love to have one with tilt. The problem I have with mine now is the safeties are worn out and it is generally in not great shape. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

Thanks,

Dylan Long

Hmmm...not sure but I don't think the steering boxes changed much over the years, so just about any GM box should bolt up.  What you should do is measure your column, length and also the diamter of the end shaft and length from the firewall to the steering box.  Then make a little junkyard trip and measure the same stuff on various vehicles.  I'm thinking that a '70s GM truck column should be pretty close, but you may have to check into a car column.  If you find one that measures out, just look for the same make/model with a tilt column and you're set.  The only thing is your '66 has the ignition key on the dash, and the newer stuff has the key on the column.  There are also aftermarket columns with tilt that don't have the key, you might check some of the hot-rod magazines or Summit Racing Catalog.

Also, '67-'72 trucks still have the key on the dash, and there are replacement columns available, with tilt, for those, that might be the best thing to start measuring.

You may want to Check a company called IDidIt  I think its www.ididit.com   they have a lot of nice stuff and may be able to help you out or at least give you some good info.   But it looks as though Jeff has given you some pretty good advice. :)
