Edlebrock Performer Package

Recommended Posts

After crawling around my truck yesterday, I decided I really need to do something about my rusty manifolds, worn carburator etc.  I like the idea of using Edlebrock's Performer set up.  You know, the manifold, cam, and carb.  The advertising says 420 HP with their heads...  I don't have 1500 duckies to throw down for that.  I was wondering if anybody knew if the Edlbrock package would perform well (obviousley won't get 420 HP) with out using their heads?

I was thinking I would get some hedmann or hooker headers, the Edlebrock intake, cam and  carb, get the heads cleaned up (probably going to break an exhaust stud) and go with that.

Any input?

I have the Edelbrock package - Cam, Intake and just recently the 600 cfm carb. I'm pretty sure they're stock heads.

I can guarantee I'm not making 420hp, though.

It does run very strong though. It pulls strong down low and doesnt let up til it shifts (3800rpms unless I manually shift it) and when I manually shift it it continues to pull without a glitch. The highest I've had the nutz to take it to is 4500 rpms.

I know i have a solid 110-120 compression across all 8 cyls, and my timing has been pretty far off since I bought the truck, and I haven't really opened it up since I fixed the timing, so when I get a chance, I'll get a current g-tech number for you.   As of now, my baseline after the headers, before the new carb is 12.8 seconds from 0-60.

And my tranny's slipping too.  (More justification for the 700R4 swap project nearing the approval phase)

Performer system works great with stock equipment, so do headers.  The exhaust manifolds are pretty restrictive.  If you are going to stay mostly stock buy the Performer intake, not the Perfomer RPM intake.  Also, I recommend DynoMax CeramCoat headers if you are staying mostly stock.  They have 1-5/8" primary tubes, which make better low and mid-range power and work better with stock engines than the larger 1-3/4" primary tubes.  Also, they are ceramic coated for better looks, longer life, and better internal heat retention, and are a little over $200 from Summit Racing Equipment.

Check my website, you can see what all this stuff looks like on an otherwise stock 454 in my Suburban.  Made a HUGE difference in performance and gas mileage.

Yeah, I don't want to drag race anyone, well maybe one or two.  I just want a little more power!

I just can't see putting twelve hundred bucks into a fifteen hundred dollar truck!  I'll try to post a picture of it tomorrow.  Running out of time.  Ahh!  Boss just called!  Gotta go!
