What were the years for the 1 ton axles on the chevy/gmc pickups?  I know their in the 70's.  72-78 i was thinking?   I plan on buying one this summer, from somewhere down  not more than prolly 3 states down heh heh.  (from Michigan)   I'm sure I could get one for cheap, of which those axles are worth more than the truck, is that the years that they had a kick ass tranny too?

Thank you for all your help.

Any one-ton truck should have one-ton axles.  Are you talking about the full-floating axles?  Dually or single wheel?  I can try to find out.

As far as transmissions, automatic or standard?  The TurboHydramatic 400 (TH400) has been GMs heavy duty automatic from 1965(ish) until the 4L80E was introduced somewhere in the 90's.  TH400s are still pretty plentiful, most of the older 1/2 ton trucks used them until mileage and emissions took control in the early-mid eighties.
