John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-19-2019 GM's import brand, Buick, is slashing its prices on the most popular vehicles in the company's lineup. Each of the company's top-selling models are discounted by double-digit percentages. The Encore subcompact crossover makes up about half of Buick's total sales. Buick is now offering discounts of up to $6,276 a whopping 23% of its new-vehicle price. These are 2019 model-year vehicles, not leftovers. The Envision two-row crossover is now being discounted by as much a $7,015. The Enclave is being discounted by a staggering $9,423. Buick is running television advertisements tied to the March madness hoop tourneys to promote the fire sale pricing. There are impressive deals on the Regal and Cascada and also the Lacrosse available. Check out Buick's website for details on the deals being offered through the end of March.

John Goreham Staff Writer 8-3-18 General Motors is concerned that the Buick model that makes up about one in five of all Buick sales will be unprofitable when the new tariff on imported Chinese goods is applied to it. To try to avoid paying the tariff on the low-volume crossover, GM has employed a two-pronged strategy. First, GM pulled in six months inventory from its Chinese factory and sent those Envisions to the U.S. ahead of the import duty being imposed. GM sells about 20,000 Envisions every six months in the U.S., though sales have slowed a bit recently. In China, GM sells about 100,000 Envisions every six months. The second way GM is trying to keep this non-union-built imported Chinese vehicle from being subject to the tariff is by lobbying. GM has reached out to the U.S. trade representative to plead its case for an exemption. This will be a long swim for GM, whose June quarterly sales recap headline was “GM Gains Half a Point of Market Share as Chevrolet and GMC Second Quarter Deliveries Soar.” included in its four main points outlined at the top of the report was, “Double-digit gains or better for 14 vehicle lines, including every single Chevrolet and GMC pickup and SUV nameplate.” Every single Chevrolet & GMC pickup and every full-sized SUV GM builds is presently built in North America and protected by a 25% import tariff. And has been for 55 years since President Johnson instituted it. Some facts in this story were verified by this Reuters story.

Buick cannot decide on if the Envision is a 2016 model or 2017. On its information page, it calls it both. We do know it will go on sale in the middle of 2016. The Envision will have nearly identical dimensions to the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and Lincoln MKC. Interestingly, Buick does not list the Lexus NX as a competitor, despite the Lexus having the second most sales in the segment. Could this perhaps mean that a Cadillac version of the Envision is coming soon? In addition to matching the dimensions of the competitors in the premium compact crossover segment, Buick is also matching the engine specifications almost exactly. Like all the top sellers in the segment, it will use a 2.0-liter turbo with 252 hp. This will mean that the Envision should match the fuel economy of the other competitors, most of whom use premium unleaded fuel. On the Buick specification sheet is mentions the fuel type, saying "Premium recommended, but not required." That alone will save owners about 10% on fuel costs. If there is any doubt which model Buick is modeling the Envision after let us share a few specifications: Lexus NX 200t Buick Envision Length 182.3" 183.7" Width 73.6" 72.4" Height 64.8" 66.8" Weight 4047 lb 4050 lb Torque 258 ft-lb 260 ft-lb According to the Detroit News General Motors will import the new Envision from China. This could be why the Envision does not have the same dimensions as any other GM crossover.
