ACdelco UPF1218 oil filter

Recommended Posts

SHORT: I need to know the GM part # that equils ACdelco UPF1218

LONG:finally found a larger oil filter for a 8.1L in my silverado the PF1218 (GM# 25160561) it is a full size oil filter and should have a lot more contaminant capacity than the dinky stock one, this filter fits a bunch of stuf but more importantly it is desighned for an express 3500 van with 8.1L     the seal is the same dia the thread is 13/16 16tpi (same) the drop to the start of the threads is the same and it has the anti drain back valve the only diffrence it is one quart instaed of one pint like the stock one BUT:

I have a problem I want it in the ac delco ultra gaurd gold UPF1218 no problem ac delco makes one but GMpartsdirect.com (only known source) only searches by GM (8digit) and acdelco's site is only in ACdelco #'s the box has both but I do not have a box and cannot find one locally if anyone uses this filter please tell me the 8 digit off the box a # for a case of them would be great to :D

ALTERNATIVE: is there another acdelco gold filter that is good on the 8.1L?

thank you raventai

by my measurements yes, I started by measureing all the filters at the parts store and found the pf1218 to be verry close

stock: PF454 (fram ph8873 only stock filter in newnan GA)

seal ID 3.103" OD 3.420"

thread .765" ID 16 tpi, starts .235" down from top of seal

PF1218:

seal ID 3.115 OD 3.487

thraed .765" 16tpi" starts .182" from top of seal

filter is 5.5" long

has drain back valve

the seal on the pf1218 is slightly wider, this my be a manufacturer diffrence and +/- trying to measure a flexable surface I will know more when i do the first oil change and measure the seal seat and old filter

the only thing that may cause a problem is the diffrence in  thread start height if the trreads end to abruptly on the filter mount then it might not work again I will know more when I do the first oil change

I then found a bit of confadence when I put the #pf1218/upf1218 in to www.acdelco.com parts catalog "find vehickles by part #" and got 79 pages of vehickles back one of them being a 2001 3500 express van with 8.1L

also found a purolator L40084 (acdelco=PF932) it is way over kill at almost 9" but it has no drain back valve, I may try it for fit (spin on and back off again) but wont use it in service and I may run into problems of clearance

seal: ID 3.114 OD 3.345

thread: .765 16tpi starts .105 down from seal top ???

this one may not clear the frame because of its length

it officialy fits 366,427,5.7,292 used in shcool busses, kodiac 6x4and top kick 83-96

sience the purolator L40084 (ac delco pf932) is not used on any 8.1's officialy and the larger diffrence in thread start height I think I am going to go with the UPF1218 it is big enuf to give better flow and contaminant capacity

when I do the oil change will post original filter and filter receptical demansions

thread measured with sterret thread pitch gauge, demensions measured with cheezy cen-tech dial caliper

above from left to right

pf454: 3" is accualy marked "replace with pf454" ??? and has a red seal like the ultra gaurd gold. good filter in plan cloths? anyways it dose not have a drain diafram that I can see I ordered a filter cutter so i can look arround inside. I will tell what I find

pf1218: 5" installed soon to be replaced with upf1218 :D , never mind the brown bloches, I forgot to take a pic until after i preloaded it with oil

L40084 9" ( = pf932) this filter is neat there is plenty of room to the frame, you extended drain guys might be interested in this for ts ultra capacity didint use it because of the lack of anti drain back valve that i can see (find out when I cut it open)

well they all will fit, a bunch of others would fit also as the seal seat is verry wide and forgiving

the mount demensions are

seal seat: OD 3.100" OD 3.905" eaven thow the seat is nice and wide I wuld not get a filter where tha can itself is wider than 3.9" as there is a oil pan mount lug verry close to the edje of the seal seat outer ring

the center stud is threaded all the way( 13/16 16 tpi) so there are no considerations of how high the filter threads are unless they are protruding or verry recessed where there would be lack of thread engagement

the pf454 and pf1218 are almost identical eaven down to the spot welds accept for the valve if u want the same size as the 1218 but with out the valve the pf35 is the same also 5.5 long no valve

I am glad I decided to change the oil so early, (500 total miles) the oil was nasty looking guess it is from sitting sience 5-15-01 (build date) and only only getting 22 miles must have had some crud , it was a wierd yellowish color looks like it might have had some watter in it (siting to long) looks good now have a hard time reading the stick :D

hope this helps anyone who wants a bigger oil filter

any coments on the drain back valve and why it is not on the origanal? on pourpose?

BTW. it took 7 Quarts instead of 6.5 like the manual said it would

Good info!!  I assume you have a 2 wheel drive truck??  I cannot see where I could get the larger filter on my 8.1L due to the fact the front drive shaft is about an inch or two below the oil filter....  Guess I'll have to stick with the dealers PF454 until Mobil 1 makes an oil filter for the 8.1L....

I'll be doing oil change #1 on mine this weeked.  1,000 miles.

I took a quick look through the fenderwall when I was waxing it last weekend and could plainly see it but I did not see the driveshaft underneath it.  That may be a problem for us 4x4 guys.  :D

ahhh, that is why mine has all that space there. yes it is a 2 wheel, I have about  a foot or more until it would contact the frame there is nothind else in the area, the upf/pf1218 are 5.5" long + some extra room to install it, get yor tape measure I still may fit (not the realy big one, the medium one)

i caould not figure out why there was such a small filter on that big block now with the shaft thing it makes sense  :stupid:

FYI - The PF1218 filter is the factory recommended oil filter for trucks with the 7.4l 454 engine AND 4 wheel-drive.

On the 2500 4WD 454, the PF1218 is a very awkward fit (but it works).  I'm not sure how this would compare to a 496 4WD, but I would hope that the PF1218 would fit similarly.

That big L40084 9" filter is a bit overboard I think, and could even cause mechanical problems (oil pump, sump etc) due to the extra quart or two required.

yea sounds like I am the only 2 wheel wonder here

get your tape out during the change it may still fit if u are interested in a larger filter, isint a new truck nice :D

cool suosedly the 496 is based on the 454 so it would make sense that they could take the same oil filter

as for the 9" it is definatly overkill I am going to shy away for warrenty reasons (dont want to give the dealer ammo) as the 5.5" is called out for on some 8.1's and as u said on 454's

I think the extra oil quanity of the 9" is a good thing, the sump will still have the same ammount of oil in it as the extra will always be in the filter there should be less load on the pump as the large surface area of the paper in the filter should cause less back pressure, if I am wrong in this asumption please do tell, but again I am weary of it until I look inside there may be something diffrent in that setup inside (bypass press, reverse flow etc.) so for now I am going to use the pf/upf1218

just ordered 6 (case) of the upf 1218 ultragaurd gold filters from www.gmpartsdirect.com

Min.Qty: 1

Unit Price: $3.79

Quantity: 1

Well I gave her it's maiden oil change tonight and there is NO WAY a PF1218 will fit on our 4x4's.  Not just because of front driveshaft clearance but also getting it into the mount area and then on and off the mount itself wouldn't work.

Called Mobil1 and found the PF-1218 equivalent is M1-302.

He said it is not recommended for the 8.1 because of clearance problems.  (memo from GM)

I asked if only the 4wd had the problems and he said the memo read 2wd also because of "possible steering shaft clearance problems".

I asked if/when Mobil1 would make the equivalent for the PF-454 and he said there has been talk, but no decisions yet.

I went ahead w/the stock PF-454 because I had already bought a couple from the dealer before I read this thread.  And I am not so sure about adding the extra .5 quart to my new HD yet.

I am probably going to order either the UPF-1218 or the M1-302 for the next oil change becuase of the drain back valve.

Let us know if you have any problems Reventai.

stearing shaft??? that makes no sense the stearing shaft is far away someone @ mobil one did not know a drive shaft from a stearing shaft, If it were not snowing out there I would take a picture there is a whole lot of nothing in that area the realy big filter fit fine to

nope no problems I would not be worried about the extra 1/2 quart it stays in the filter at all times the level in the pan will not change and has only one effect more dirt collection area and better flow both good things

I have been through 2 of these so far

the filter is stock on the 8.1 in 2001 1ton cube vans
