The Toyota Tacoma is still the top-rated vehicle of all in resale value according to KBB. The truck deserves praise for that and it gets it in spades from the auto media. However, look closely at this year's KBB Top Ten vehicles list and what jumps out is that the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are now within 2% of the Tacoma. The Taco has a three-year retained value of 72.9%. The GMC Canyon is at 70.7% and the Chevy Colorado is rated at 70%. There is more to it than just that.

KBB's retained value percentages are based on MSRP. Toyota has a reputation for selling vey close to MSRP. GM's brands almost always discount. If you are a veteran or if you qualify for another of GM's promotional discounts your buy price can be well below MSRP. This is strictly conjecture, but in real-world used truck sales, the Colorado and Canyon may already be overtaking the venerable Tacoma.

The GMC Sierra is also danger-close to matching the Toyota Tundra now. Although the spread is actually wider, we all know the Sierra doesn't sell near MSRP.

General Motors now has four of the top 10 vehicles in America for resale. In terms of vehicles sold, GM dominates. Yet, KBB named Subaru the best brand for resale among mainstream brands. Go figure.
