Can a Work Truck be fast as a sports car, as useful as a set of tools, and as innovative as a smart phone? First drive impressions for the Silverado EV WT are out… here’s our take.
Chevrolet recently hosted a limited media group to drive the brand-new Silverado EV WT. During the event, outside media had their first chance to experience the mass-production version of the HUMMER EV. Here’s what we (sorta) thought.
While Chevrolet promised to deliver a Silverado EV WT to our office soon, we couldn’t make this event. But our friend, Tim Esterdahl, Publisher of Pickup Truck + SUV Talk, was able to go…. And he worked closely with us to answer our questions during and after the drive. Let’s watch his full review video and see what he thinks. Then continue after and see our thoughts.
It’s interesting to see Tim’s experiences with the Silverado EV. While the vehicle has been announced for nearly a full year now, this is the first time anyone outside of General Motors has seen a lot of specific details about the truck.
A few things stood out to us while watching Tim’s video. First off- the range. It’s amazing to see over 350 miles of range when the Silverado EV’s battery is under 80%. Our HUMMER EV can only see 370 miles of range at 100% battery on a good day. 80% charge typically shows us at under or about 300 miles of range.
Secondly, the ability of the Silverado EV to off-board power is incredible. Again, this is something our HUMMER EV cannot do. However, the Silverado EV has plugs upon plugs of power. 120v 20amp power. 220v 30 amp power. Over 10kW of output standard. With a simple 30-amp generator cable, you can power your home during an outage with the standard equipment on the Silverado EV. Can you say game changer? Power saws, battery tool charging, and pretty much any use you can think of that you’d be able to do from a home power outlet is on the table.
Third off- the interior is bare bones. That’s not a terrible thing, however. Tim mentions the interior should be easy to clean, which is vital for a work truck. The center console is also versatile with a ton of room inside for storage. Tim also remarks how much space there is in the second row, which is on par with what we’ve seen in our HUMMER EV.
Towing and hauling are also better than the HUMMER, with a 10,000lb trailer capacity and 1,400lbs of total carrying capacity. In another twist, the Silverado EV WT comes with a regular old spare tire. That’s neat because our HUMMER only comes with an inflator.
Of course, Tim is impressed with the acceleration of the Silverado EV WT. While get-up-and-go isn’t uncommon for an EV, when was the last time you heard a journalist comment on how “quick” a work truck was? What a world we live in!
The larger range Silverado EV WT will come with a 24-module 212-kWh battery pack for a 450-mile range. A smaller capacity battery will also be offered with a 350-mile range. At least the larger battery pack will be 350kW DC fast charge compatible. That means you’ll be able to add 100-miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
With this launch, expect a lot more information to come out about the Silverado EV in the near future. As mentioned above, Chevrolet has promised a few days in a Silverado EV WT in the near future at home and we’ve already got some serious testing plans for our time. We’ve also got a Silverado EV RST reservation ready to go for when production starts later this year.
