Our spy photographer recently captured a prototype of the next-generation Acadia testing on public roads and reports back what they saw and what we can determine from looking at the stealthily captured photos.

Prototypes for the next-generation GMC Acadia have begun testing, and our first photos confirm that GM has repositioned the crossover back into a big, full-size offering.

Back in 2017, GMC changed the Acadia from a large minivan alternative into a smaller midsize crossover. While its Chevy Traverse sibling maintained its big footprint, GMC reduced the Acadia’s length by 7.2-inches, and its width by 3.5-inches, thoroughly separating the models within GM’s lineup. That downsizing experiment will soon be a thing of the past, judging by this new prototype.

This new Acadia prototype showcases a long wheelbase and a generous rear section for a comfortable third row and ample cargo capacity. The styling details are thoroughly covered in camouflage, but the Acadia prototype’s early placeholder lighting is consistent with GMC’s recent design conventions, suggesting a design influenced by the body-on-frame Yukon SUV.

The current Acadia rides on a shortened version of GM’s relatively new Chi platform, while the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave utilize the long-wheelbase Chi architecture. It’s unclear if this upsized Acadia is adopting the LWB Chi platform, or if it’s riding on a new modular SUV platform rumored for GM’s future product pipeline. Regardless of the underpinnings, it’s clear that the Acadia will soon be back shopping in the Plus-Size department.

The upsized Acadia is expected to reach the market next year, debuting for the 2024 model year.
