Ute Tray/Flatbed?

I think I've outgrown my 8' bed and I'd like to go to an ute tray with fold down sides. Has anyone here put one on a GM truck? I would probably want to custom build my own from aluminum, just curious if there are any weird design issues I would need to know about in advance...for example areas of the frame I should NOT use as mounts.

 

Probably going for this style, with ladder hoops:
