Powdercoat Bumpers

Recommended Posts

Sweet! How much did it cost to do? I've been looking for a shop to do mine and I see you're not far from Houston.

I just had to buy powder, a buddy of mine powdercoats for a living. I'll post more pictures of his work for you to see. South Side Powder Coating (SSPC) He does a lot of powder coating for the South Houston area.

Looks good! What did that run you? I bet the powder coat holds up much better than my factory paint on the front bumper, rock chips are a sumbitch

Fortunately I just had to buy the powder and my buddy hooked me up. Got in a fender bender recently and had to get a new front bumper. Opted for powder coating for exactly that reason. A lot of people complain about paint chips on the painted bumpers. Hoping this'll be extremely durable like the chrome was!

Looks nice. I used to do some powder coating in our other house. I had a small oven in the basement. My son and I did a set of wheels, valve covers, air cleaner lids, intakes, motor cycle parts, car parts, license plate frames, and a several things for the company he works for. Whatever we could fit in the oven we powdercoated. Looks good and holds up pretty well on most stuff. We did an exhaust manifold heat sheild for a little Honda Civic in grey and surprisingly it held its color and looked good for over 10,000 miles until he sold the car. That one surprised me.

That's awesome! Kind of an interesting idea to powder coat a heat shield, I wonder why he wanted that?

It was galvanized metal. The galvanized had worn off and the shield had started rusting. We sand blasted it to get it clean. Sprayed it a grey color and it held and stayed looking good. We also did the valve cover in a dark blue to match the exterior with the raised letters on the cover polished aluminum. The dipstick handle we coated. Any little thing we could get off that we thought wouldn't make it too tacky. Turned out great. Still have the equipment and hope to one day do it again. We just had a kit from Eastwood that we started with. We just bought powder from Summit Racing most of the time.

The guy doing the wheels and bumpers posted by the OP is way better setup than we were. His stuff looks awesome!!

Looks great, like it with the chrome grill

Although it's screaming for the bowtie mod now

I appreciate it! Having trouble with deciding on a bow tie though, it's quite common for the color matched bow ties. I'm trying hard to think of something different.

Also I really want to see if they have an illuminated bow tie that fits. Even if they do though it'll probably be outrageously priced haha.

Did he have to blast the bumpers to get rid of the chrome first?

Nope. Just roughed up the chrome with some sand paper on an orbital grinder. Then washed it down to get all of the sand remnants off. Warmed it up with a propane torch to get all the moisture out of the metal. Then he started powder coating.
