Center Carrier Bearing

Recommended Posts

I believe I may have found my clunking problem. The drive shaft was serviced for the lube job a couple of weeks ago and now it clunks during start up once in a while. I checked the center bearing this morning and it looks like it is the problem. The bearing housing when the drive shaft was re-installed was located about an inch rearward of where it has always ran shown clearly by the shiny spots where the casting was bolted up to the cross tube. The bearing has room all the way around between it and the casting. Normal? Part of the bearing looks like it is out of the casting to the front by almost an inch. The drive shaft I can move it all around inside the casting. Can someone until me this is broken or if it is supposed to be this way - I doubt it, but ???? The bolts on the bearing casting are tight so I see no evidence that it has moved since it came out of service. See pics.

The pic on the reply looks as if it is 180 backwards from mine. The race is to the rear on his and is to the front on mine. Is this possible??

Thanks so much

Mine almost looks 180 degrees backwards compared to yours. The race lip and space is to the rear on yours and to the front on mine. Is this possible.

your rubber looks to be in bad shape. hard to tell from the picture though. It could cause the the bearing to move around. was the shaft ever serviced? new you joints or anything? I had truck with a center bearing and it was pretty important to get it balanced as entire unit when it was serviced.
